From prompt Fatal Frame, You & or / Sakuya, first symptoms of Luna Sedata syndrome.
You Haibara's experiences with Getsuyuu Syndrome.

You Haibara sat on the end of his bed, staring down at the photos he held in his hands. The people in this picture seemed to be the perfect happy family; a husband and his wife, their young son and daughter standing beside them. In another photo, the husband with his two children, now grown, and a young girl; in this picture the people were unsmiling, the wife absent. She - You's mother - had died years before, the victim of a deadly disease which plagued the island. Driven to insanity, she had leapt off of the roof of the hospital. In a cruel twist of irony, it was the very hospital run by You's father, Shigeto Haibara, specifically treating this disease.

The illness, called "Getsuyuu Syndrome", completely destroyed whomever it infected. It burrowed through their mind, their memory - even their very soul and perception of their "self" - destroying as it went. It erased everything. The sufferer would become drawn to the moon, and the act of pursuing it took over what remained of their life. Many patients didn't even reach the final stages of the illness, either committing suicide to escape the curse, or falling from rooftops or drowning in pools while chasing the round, white object in the sky which they so cherished.

As soon as one life left the Haibaras' small, closed-off world, another entered it in the form of Ayako. After she was born, things seemed to return to normal for a while; having her around seemed to somewhat ease his father's suffering after the loss of his wife, and he enjoyed being with her. Ayako was like a tiny copy of her mother, in all ways but one: while she had received Sakuya's beauty, she had inherited You's mentality. The two delighted in creating mischief together, and were happy to spend long periods of time with only each other for company.

Life had been peaceful, and passed without major event. The Haibaras spent most of their time at home, secluded from the other islanders. You began to learn his father's trade, watching him work with patients and reading medical books, assisting with research when he could. His sister, however, was far from peaceful.

It had begun slowly at first; You had awoken to noises in the middle of the night, and found Sakuya wandering around the house as if in a trance, muttering nonsensically. When she finally snapped out of it, she couldn't recall getting out of bed, and had no idea how she had got there. She began to forget small things, and had to constantly be reminded of common daily routines, such as mealtimes and putting Ayako to bed. You and Shigeto had not been too concerned by this at first, as her memory had never been perfect.

It became impossible to ignore when You found her in the garden one night. It was a perfect night, despite the winter chill; the sky was clear, and a full moon was suspended in a sea of pure black. His sister was sitting in the middle of the grass, deathly still, her head turned up towards the sky. Her eyes were trained on the moon, unblinking.

"Sakuya?" he called softly, putting one hand on her shoulder. She didn't react, and he shook her shoulder gently. Still no response.

"Sakuya," he repeated, "you have to come inside now. You're going to freeze." His tone was authoritative, but not without a hint of worry.

His sister simply continued staring, without even acknowledging his presence. He had eventually had to call his father, who had carried a screaming and flailing Sakuya back inside, locking her in her bedroom. Afterwards, the two men had exchanged worried looks. They knew these symptoms better than anyone: it was the very disease that had claimed the life of their mother, Shigeto's wife. It had begun.

Everything had changed after that night. Sakuya had been moved to the sanatorium for treatment, leaving You and Ayako behind. They still had fun playing together, but it wasn't the same. Ayako missed her mother, and You spent the days worrying. When Shigeto arrived home, his son would simply ask how Sakuya was - "She's alright," was the only response he ever received. The look in his father's eyes said all he needed to know, however, and both men already knew it well. There was no cure for this disease. They were helpless.

In the following months, Sakuya's symptoms continued to worsen. She no longer remembered the faces of her family members, and suddenly became distraught when she looked into mirrors. She had faint memories of a daughter, whom she tried to replace with one of the girls staying at the same facility. After the two had been separated, Sakuya only sat on her bed, clinging onto one of her many dolls and whispering to it. You missed her terribly, but it was impossible for him to visit.

You remembered the night when his world had finally collapsed. Ayako had begun to sleepwalk, eventually ending up in the garden, watching the moon - sitting in the same spot her mother had occupied just months before. She had been hospitalised the following day. You had spent that entire day in bed, unable to bring himself to get up or even say goodbye.

At least he had been able to stay with Ayako. The room he was in now was attached to hers, and she could come in and out as she wished. She had no idea who he was, of course, but just being with her made You happy. When he had finally regained his energy, his spirit, after she was brought here, the first thing he had done was head for the mainland. He ran a clinic there for a while, where he carried out experiments which he hoped would one day lead to a cure for Getsuyuu Syndrome, but that stupid detective had chased him out. He had been forced to leave in the middle of the night, after a surprise raid, and had no time to take his notes and materials with him. It was all gone.

That was why he was here, now. You was glad to be back; he hadn't missed the island at all, but being away from Ayako and Sakuya, even though he couldn't see her, had been painful. At least he could watch over Ayako now - in Sakuya's stead, as well. There were still plenty of subjects to experiment on here. He couldn't give up, not because of Kirishima; to give up his whole life because of one irritating fly he couldn't swat was something he simply wouldn't - couldn't - do. He was going to save them, no matter what. You Haibara would have his family back.

I think this explored You's mind really well! Especially towards the end, when he had to deal with Ayako being ill as well as Sakuya. This was really fantastic, thank you!
