Something silly I wrote quickly this morning. :P
Seijiro Makabe visits Kunihiko Asou before he goes to Minakami Village, to procure a camera.

---

“Please, don't touch that!”

Dr. Kunihiko Asou threw out his arms in panic, lunging forwards and positioning himself between the cabinet and Seijiro Makabe's outstretched arm, using his body to shield the precious device as he shouted. He had been fetching some items for Makabe in the back room, and returned to find the man reaching for the cabinet in which he stored his cameras.

“I am still working on that prototype. It is very delicate and must not be touched by anybody,” Asou explained. His friend folded his arms and, with a huff, plopped back into his chair. Asou knelt down to check that no harm had come to the prototype Camera Obscura; even after all of these years, Seijiro still couldn't help himself from poking and prodding when his curiosity kicked in, and there was no telling what damage this could cause. Kunihiko was, of course, much the same most of the time, and as such wished that he'd not been quite so harsh – it was in their nature, after all. However, this was a very important item; he hoped that this one camera may, one day, redefine the entire nature of occult studies...

“Perhaps I can find something else for you to try, though – here.” The man held aloft another camera, slightly smaller than the last and with a different design. The casing was solider than the other cameras – even if Seijiro did get overzealous, as was so often the case, this camera would most likely withstand the abuse. “I've not had the chance to test it myself yet, but it should be functional... I was hoping that you might test it for me, when you go on your travels,” Asou said, a slight gleam of hope in his eye.

Seijiro's face lit up and he drew himself up in the chair, gripping the armrests. “You really finished it? If it works – no, when it works – think of what we can do with it!” he said in a loud whisper, almost to himself, staring at the floor with wide eyes. “The past will no longer be a secret. We can see everything. Everything, Kunihiko!”

Asou chuckled and gave Makabe a calming pat on the shoulder. “Relax, Seijiro; you're getting a bit ahead of yourself, here. Take a look and see what you think of it, first.” Smiling, he handed the camera over. He hadn't seen the man this excited in many years.

Makabe turned the prototype over in his hands, examining it closely. There were small symbols painted on the front, around the lens. It was quite compact, and seemed relatively easy to carry around. That was ideal for a travelling folklorist like himself.

“I'm planning a trip to a village up in the mountains, soon, with my apprentice. Legends tell of some kind of gate to hell there. I would like to try to photograph it with this – if that's alright with you?” Seijiro prodded.

Asou nodded. “That's just what I was hoping for. A real test subject. Hold on a moment, I have more.” Returning to the back once more, he dug through the overflowing cupboards and drawers in which his research materials were stored. He came back with a radio, secured underneath his arm and tucked under his chin.

Seijiro was wide-eyed again.

“This,” Asou explained, “can replay thoughts of spirits. I think this should be enough to satisfy even you, old friend. If you think you can carry all of this, that is.”

Shaking his head, Seijiro reached out and ran his finger along the edge of the radio. “That's what apprentices are for.”

“You are truly brilliant, Kunihiko.” Seijiro said, after thoroughly examining the items. “But, let me ask you one thing – do you ever leave this room?”

His friend laughed. “I do, sometimes. Perhaps the two of us should do so now? Bring your camera and get some practice; it only contains standard film at the moment, but that should be enough for you to get used to the feel of it.”

Seijiro almost jumped out of his seat, but managed to restrain himself - barely. He picked up the camera, and the two men headed for the door.

“Now,” said Asou, “tell me about this village...”

Somehow, I rather like the idea of Ryozo as Seijiro's packhorse. :D So great to see fic about these two! I love the comfortable familiarity here.
