Final part! Well, final part 1 & 2... Makoto Shibata's crazy life! Of course, there's still lots left... xD Maybe. Maaybe. Originals are here and here.

Zero ~zero~ Anthology Final Part: Development Room
Interviewee: Makoto Shibata (director)

...Now let's talk about some things that actually happened.

Honestly, those involved in the Zero ~zero~ project aren't really horror enthusiasts. It might surprise you, but the staff don't often watch horror films, and don't really like ghost stories. Since I'm usually the one with most of the interest in scary things, if I had to say then I'd say that there are lots of people who really don't like being scared.

Because of that, whenever some kind of mysterious phenomenon occurred, someone would speak up with, "Well, we'd better offer something up for them, then..."

"What, if we do that you won't be scared? What kind of benefit do you think that will have!?"

When that happened, I was able have the talk of an offering shelved with my intimidating atmosphere. As a result of that, the many paranormal happenings during this project went well.
Here are some of the things I experienced during that time.

Cracked Fluorescent Lamp
The famous episode that sent Tecmo into confusion

I think it happened at about 2 or 3 in the afternoon, when the project was in the middle stages of development. While everyone was quietly working, a sudden loud, sharp, "Pop!" sound resounded. Everyone looked at each other. By the sound, something had clearly broken. We stopped working, and began looking around the room to see what had happened.

"...Is this it?"

Before long, one of the staff members called out to me whilst looking up at the ceiling. One of the fluorescent lights on the ceiling in front of the development room lift had gone out. If it had broken, there should've been lots of debris scattered on the floor when we looked down, but there was nothing. We took a close look, and even though the light was broken into tiny pieces it was the kind with a hood, so all of the bits were stopped by the hood. But, since the lightbulb was inside the hood, we didn't know what kind of object could've broken it.

Even I, since joining this company, hadn't heard anything like it having happened before. The person who came to change the light also revealed, "I wonder why would something like this happened..."

Afterword: Since I spoke about this incident to a magazine, I think some people probably know about it. Even people from the company asked, "Did that really happen?", but it's a true story. (Shibata)

Showing "impossible things" in Zero ~zero~
It happened while making the movies for Zero ~zero~

Something happened to the movie team.

In this game, there's a video in which the three members of the novelist's party come down the Rope Hallway, but while the movie was being created I heard from the staff, "Something is weird".

When they visit, just as the novelist is on the verge of turning around when they finally reach the mirror, something like a white bar appears just for a second in the corner of the screen. We went back through the frames to check, and caught a glimpse of a foot floating in space in the upper corner of the mirror. It was just as if a person was hanging from above...

"Mr. Shibata, I checked the data and nothing is here. But, when we did the movie, somehow it got in there."

"But, is it some kind of bug? Maybe the character got warped for a moment, or something like that."

"But then, if there's no foot in front of the mirror as well, it's weird. But the foot is only IN the mirror. I don't understand it."

"..."

"It's kind of scary but, after all of this work, can we leave it as it is?"

"No; I think it's a bug, so there must be something we can do to fix it."

"...Right."

We did all we could to get rid of that foot, and though we'd half given up, at some point during the process of creating the movie it just vanished.

Afterword: We thought that one of our tools was malfunctioning somehow, but we still don't know what caused it. However, since it resembled a part of the scenario I was writing at the time, it was scary. (Shibata)

Ghost's shadow approaching the Zero ~zero~ director
A bag with a woman's hair in it?!

Since I've become involved in this project, a few strange things seem to happen in my room. Sometimes, there was a single long hair lying around. Since the hair was so long and glossy, it seemed to have belonged to a young woman. Of course, it obviously wasn't mine.

When I told him about it, the producer, Kikuchi, teased: "You're kidding... Do you really have no idea about it?" But, unfortunately, I really didn't know.

At first, I thought it had just become stuck to my clothes, and thought something like, "Maybe it's always becoming attached to my clothes? But I wasn't on a crowded train..." But it was lying there very time I went back to my room, and I gradually started getting a bad feeling about it. When I first started seeing it, I thought I should clean up the floor, but even then, when I got home, sure enough there was always a long hair on the ground.

Believe it or not, I had the wild idea of "What if, after I get home, a long-haired woman is standing in this place...?"

Ghost, if you're going to come out, come out. But if the ghost does come out, it'd be good if she's beautiful. All of those ghosts I'd seen had rotten faces, and none of them were all that good. But this glossy hair gave me hope.

After a while, the hair started getting into even more amazing places. It was in my bag. When I got home and opened it, there was a single long hair inside. I was really surprised when I saw it. Now I knew it couldn't be just a coincidence. But, the net day, I found it in an even MORE amazing place.

When I went back to my room, and went over to the computer to write up a scenario, I saw that it had been placed on top of the keyboard. I was afraid that it meant "Don't write", but after that, I didn't find any more hair.

Afterword: If there was a female ghost, I'm sad that I never got a single glimpse of her. (Shibata)

Besides this, strange phenomena are happening. Planner "T" spoke of seeing hair hanging from the ceiling of the development room at night. Similarly, Planner "H" saw the reflection of a woman in the glass as they were leaving work, but when they turned around there was nothing... and so on.

However, if you want to know about one last, hidden story, please click here...

Zero ~zero~ Anthology Final Part: Development Room
Interviewee: Makoto Shibata (director)

I didn't think you would want to speak of this officially, but in spite of this, I think you have to tell us about that thing...

The staff member thought they saw hair hanging down, but maybe they imagined it. They thought they saw a woman's reflection in the glass, but maybe it was so dark that they didn't see it properly.

Actually, I clearly saw before my eyes an unbelievable thing, which was not at a level with such possiblity for being mistaken. Such a juicy story should have quite a bit of hype, but I didn't really care to talk about it.

I didn't tell the staff, and naturally I didn't speak about it in the magazine interview. When the project was over, I finally felt like talking about it. Of course, there was a reason for that...

The ghost that appeared in the Zero ~zero~ development room
A ghost actually appeared in the development room

It was during late development, after 2 in the morning. No one else was left on the floor, and I was the only one working. The other staff seemed to be napping. It was quite lonely, being the only one left on such an expansive floor, but it was sometimes like this.

It was quiet all around me, and the only sound was the noise from the computer's fan. While I was working, I suddenly raised my eyes from the computer, and noticed that the meeting room door was open.

My desk is located at the far end of the HQ's fifth floor, and from that location I have a full view of the whole floor. Just from there, I can see the 5F meeting room door through the gap at the side. Though by looking down the side I knew the door was open, I couldn't see inside.

From there, a white profile peeked out. It was horribly expressionless, and its eyes were closed. Its mouth was half-open and seemed to be hanging open. Moreover, where there should have been some hair, or something like that... but it didn't look like there was any.

There was a man with a pale face, called "U", in Project Zero. I thought that he had been sleeping in the meeting room, and was playing a joke on me, trying to make me laugh. Since U had brown hair, I thought for a moment that it just looked like it had blended in with his skin colour. That white profile just kept going in and out, repeating the motion.

Peek. Peek.

The white face just kept moving in that comical rhythm. What I saw it, I let out an involuntary laugh. "They won't stop, huh," I thought, and went back to work.

I concentrated on work for a short time, before I took a quick break and looked up. The face was still peeking, peeking, over and over.

"Hey, you're quite persistent," I thought as I stood up from my seat. That moment, the face went back inside and didn't come back out. I peeked inside the meeting room, and it pitch black in there. But when I turned on the light, there was no one inside. Then, what the hell was that face going in and out before?

...I saw it...
I have no doubt that what I clearly saw was an "impossible thing".

However, I think it was too comical to say that it was a ghost. I suppose if that face was looking at me when it was moving that it might have had malice towards me, but whenever I looked down there, when its face peeped out I could only laugh.

Maybe, spiritual experiences like this happen often. He had no grudge against me, and didn't want to scare me. He just moved there.

I don't know what he wants from our uncomfortable meeting. Perhaps geniune spiritual experiences, unlike ghost stories, have no climax, with abrupt endings.

Now I can tell it like an anecdote, but at the time I was troubled by the fact that I didn't know what the experience was. Surely those who hear the story will have a troubled reaction, too? That's why I didn't tell anyone.
